Russian/Chinese radio firmware

So I was just asked my opinion about the firmware for a radio. This is
an odd situation. The radio is a relatively cheap Chinese-made all
band portable, but there's a guy in Russia who has been releasing
firmware upgrades for it to add all kinds of additional capabilities
and improvements.

The thing is, his main site, his download site, and his discussion
forum site -- all in .ru -- don't support https: encryption at all.
And the firmware is all in ZIP files. Hmm.

The latest version of his software is paid (via PayPal, which brings
its own issues) and introduces yet other issues given the current
global situation.

My sense is that this fellow is a dedicated hobbyist putting out good
work, and there are lots of people apparently using his firmware.

But given lack of https: and the use of a Russian domain (meaning
Russian ISPs are involved) it's not a situation that I can endorse
using based on what I know right now.

What a world.
