Why I point out problems that people have with Net tech
Often when I point out the sorts of problems many users have with
using the Net, I'll get responses suggesting this or that trick, or
extension, or other workaround for these issues.
While I know that they're only trying to be helpful, the reality is
that I virtually always already know all of these suggestions, and
it's not me -- or other techies like me and the people making the
suggestions -- that I'm concerned about.
My concern is all the people who now use this technology (whether
willingly or essentially because they have no other options anymore)
who understand little or nothing about the security and other
implications, often entrust so much of their lives to the related
firms, and end up losing access to their accounts, their photos, or
sometimes, much, much worse.
Workarounds and tricks are not useful to them -- they use these
systems as provided by the firms.
And increasingly, these firms are skewing their systems in ways that
further disadvantage those who are already disadvantaged in these
respects, and have been for many years.
