Trump and the Supreme Court
There's a lot of hand-wringing going on now that the Supreme Court is
taking up the Trump immunity case, and how this could delay the trial
until after the election, which would render it moot if Trump won
since he'd just have DOJ drop the case. And yes, DOJ should have
brought the case years ago, waiting so long was inexcusable and a
major part of the problem.
BUT. Some things to keep in mind. First, even if the trial had started
on the original schedule, it could take months, even not taking into
account other routine delays that could have occurred in the process.
There was never any guarantee the trial even if started earlier would
end before the election. And that doesn't even take into account
appeals, that could be extremely lengthy and certainly would have gone
past the election.
The bottom line is that I don't think a single vote would change based
on the trial decision. I doubt a single vote would change even after
appeals. I don't think whether or not Trump would be found guilty or
not in this case matters to the election in any significant way.
Trump's base will love him all the more if he's found guilty. The
people who dislike him will continue to do so irrespective of the
trial.
And even independents, who will decide this presidential election as
they always do, by and large know exactly who Trump is and what he has
done. Make no mistake about it, new information isn't going to change
anyone's views on Trump at this point.
All that matters is turnout and people not throwing away their votes
on third-party candidates, with each such vote actually a vote for
Trump.
That's the whole enchilada. The whole ballgame. Seriously. -L
