Google Gemini is getting worse
I asked Google Gemini why it now apparently doesn't give sources or
links with the vast majority of its answers. These days it typically
doesn't give any source information or links unless you ask for them
afterwards. This means the sites from where it's sucking in data
routinely get no views back, etc. from Gemini answers. It's all just
ONE-WAY into Google, unlike traditional Search.
Here's the key section of Gemini's (Google's!) latest answer to me
about this when I asked why it doesn't source, which I would
charitably characterize as a self-serving load of nonsense. So, yeah,
Gemini wants to sound human. But it's NOT human -- it's a large
language model run by a very large corporation, dependent on data it
gathers from all over the Net. It should be providing sources and
links on EVERY answer so users have a chance to judge those answers'
veracity. And the second part of its reply is equally inane. Gemini
could easily provide source links after its answers rather than none
at all and not negatively impact "readability".
Google's handling of these issues appears to be getting much worse and
more abusive as their AI efforts evolve. -L

There are a few reasons why I may not always provide sources:
Focus on user experience: In most everyday interactions, people don't
typically cite their sources in casual conversation. My aim is to
provide information in a way that is natural and user-friendly,
similar to how a human would answer your questions.
Conciseness and readability: Including citations within every answer
can make the text lengthy and harder to read. This can be especially
true for simple factual questions where the answer is well-established
and doesn't require extensive attribution.
