"Night of the Hunter" on YouTube
Currently free (probably U.S. only) on YouTube Movies & TV is the
remarkable 1955 film "Night of the Hunter", starring Robert Mitchum,
Shelly Winters, and Lillian Gish -- and a host of others. It tells the
story of a Depression era traveling "preacher" who is actually a
serial killer -- with H A T E tattooed on the fingers of one hand and
L O V E on the fingers of the other. It was a critical and financial
failure, and was the only film credited to famed actor Charles
Laughton as director. From the opening credits onward, it is obviously
not a conventional film of the time, and it is heavily influenced by
German expressionism. Largely seen from the point of view of two
siblings being chased by Mitchum's character, it stunningly (other
than a couple of establishing shots taken back East) was entirely shot
here in L.A., mostly in sound stages including the crucial river
scenes. It is often described as a Horror Fairy Tale, and over the
years has become one of the most acclaimed film masterpieces of all
time. I recommend it VERY highly. I can pretty much assure you that
you've never seen any other film like it before!
