Beware of cellular firms pushing "fake" landline devices

Lately I've been asked about, or seen mentioned, various promotions
from Consumer Cellular and other mobile carriers that are pushing
devices using promotional wording similar to (not exact wording) "take
your landline with you anywhere you go!" or "this will make your
landline practically free!"

These are actually not what is implied, and anyone disconnecting their
landline thinking this tech is a substitute will be in for a world of
confusion.

In fact, these are just cellular gateway devices that you can plug
landline phones and other landline equipment into. They will not
function without a cellular connection. They are not landlines. They
simply permit the use of (for example) a conventional landline phone
or answering machine over a cellular connection. And yes, you can
transfer your landline phone number to the cellular account associated
with the device, but it's still nothing but a cell phone that you can
plug a landline phone into.

DO NOT BE MISLED!
