More on toll-free numbers

In answer to questions. The reason why the calling number is virtually
always revealed to the called party for toll-free numbers like 800,
888, etc. is that as "charge to called party" numbers they pass the
calling party identification via ANI -- Automatic Number
Identification -- the original billing mechanism for self-dialed
long-distance calls -- not the newer CNID - Calling Number ID (Caller
ID). While you can block CNID, under normal circumstances you cannot
block ANI. And ANI is much more difficult to spoof than CNID.
