Dear all,
I'm currently uploading pgAdmin III 1.2.0 (The final one!) debian packages. They should be available on your favorite PostgreSQL mirror as soon as mirror scripts will do their jobs.
I only built debian/unstable but you can install them on debian/testing without installing much from unstable: the only package you should add (at the time of this writing) is libwxgtk2.5.
Have fun, Raphaėl
P.S. To install these packages with apt, simply add a line like this to your sources.list:
deb [MIRROR URL]/pgadmin3/release/debian unstable pgadmin
Example for France for debian/unstable: deb ftp://ftp.fr.postgresql.org/pgadmin3/release/debian unstable pgadmin
Then just type "apt-get install pgadmin3" as root -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org

:-). w3m invokes $VISUAL on a temp file when you edit a TEXTAREA. It's *so* nice to be able to insert a file instead of cutting and pasting it.

I=B9m a bit of a dilitante with this admin stuff, so I=B9m sheepish about askin= g this, but I=B9ve searched the list archives and Apple=B9s support pages, and I=B9= m just not finding the answers I need to a few ARD issues.
Part 1 =AD ARD Security ------------------ I=B9m going to collocate an Xserve for web and db use, and thought that I=B9d use ARD 2.1 along with ssh and the admin tools for administration. I=B9m not sure that I can defend this thought on anything other than habit, as I use VNC frequently.
I=B9m having difficulty determining what parts, if any, of ARD are secure. M= y understanding is that it uses port 3283 for authentication and that this bi= t of it at least is encrypted (from the ARD user guide). Data is routed through the standard VNC port 5900, and my assumption is that this portion is probably tunnel-able through ssh a la VNC.
Questions:
* Is using ARD in this capacity a good idea, from a security standpoint? * Is ARD 2.1 able to be secured through ssh, and has anybody actually done this?
Part 2 =AD ARD and Firewall ---------------------- I=B9ve been playing with configuration of the Xserve on my private networ= k to get comfortable with the tools before tossing it out into the world. I do not have much experience with firewalls, so that=B9s received much of my attention. There may be a basic flaw in my understanding of filters operating here, but this is my experience with ARD used in conjunction with ipfw as configured through Server Admin:
- Firewall off, ARD connects without a problem.
- Start firewall with the default configuration which has an allow rule for port 3283 for all addresses. This did not allow an ARD connection through to the server. Remembering that ARD 2.1 now uses ports that ARD 1 did not, I figure it might have been implemented specifically for the previous version of ARD, I look for other ports.
- Add =B3advanced=B2 rule to allow any to any port 5900 UDP & TCP. Connection not allowed.
- Apple=B9s support page on the subject http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=3D106847 appears to commingle information from ARD 1 and 2, but suggests that additional ports may be required and points to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=3D106439 as the authoritative list. The only other port listed for ARD is 5988 TCP for WBEM. No idea what this does even after reading the referenced link, but I create a new rule to allow any to any for this port as well. Still no joy.
- As a diagnostic measure, I open any to any for all ports, connection is allowed.
- It occurs to me that the culprit may be the need to open ports dynamicall= y so I create a rule that allows any to any for ports 49152-65536 in conjunction with the rules allowing 3283, 5900 and 5988. This rule produce= s an error upon save: ipfw failure code 65. Can=B9t Google a reference for thi= s code. This causes me to suspect that everything I know is wrong; question the existence of a benevolent God; reflect upon my own mortality; etc.
Questions:
- Huh? - If in fact it is an issue with dynamic ports, would that necessitate leaving them open in order to connect via ARD? My belief is that this woul= d be a remarkably bad idea, but I=B9m open to suggestions. - Somewhere in my searching I found a comment that a firewall configured to disallow fragmented packets might stop ARD from functioning. Thoughts?
Thanks for any advice or commiseration that you might be able to spare.
