Thanks, now I understand. I didn't delete the duplicate entry from the registry but double deleting with the right click and then reentering the connection worked.

I just had a quick look in the registry and found a list of servers under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\pgAdmin III\Servers - however, I have no idea what bad effects might arise from zapping anything here - as always, tread VERY CAREFULLY in your registry....
