Opensuse 12.3 fully patched up to date. On kernel 3.9.
Ran bootstrap before configure.
Rempiled from git about 4 days ago, no problems.

adding it to the linker command line

I think I have the openssl and libcrypto libraries installed but the
compile stops at this point. Any suggestions?
32/64 bit issue?
