I'm having the same problem. The reason was, indeed, an old version (1.2.2) of the pgfplots.sty.
Now I did change that and it shows on the log-file, that TeXShop is using version 1.4.1 Unfortunately there still remains the error-messaga: I do not know the key '/pgfplots/compat' ... any hints?
