MikTeX includes version 1.5, packaged on 2011-07-30. May be you need an  
update.

I've tested your code and does not shown any cryptic message.

I've used
\pgfplotsset{compat=1.3} because [compat=1.3] as a tikzpicture option  
didn't work for me.
