This happens if one uses the key list 'error bars/.cd, mark repeat=4' . A solution would be to write 'mark repeat=4, error bars/.cd' -- it is because 'error bars/.cd' sort of "switches the key path" such that only error-bar related keys can be set. If you say that you never ever used such a key sequence then I would be interested in the source code of the offending figure - preferrably as minimal working example.
