I have identified and repaired the root cause for the bug.

Apparently, the units library always generates xlabel and ylabel -- and 
these, in turn, are undefined for polar axes. In fact, I believe that 
both are meaningless and useless. I modified their styles such that they 
will be displayed inside of the circle, and I added "use units=false" 
for every polar axis (which appears to be as useless as labels). This 
should repair the problem; at least until it becomes clear how these two 
features are supposed to interact.
