There are several options, depending on how much hacking you are willing
to do:
* If your Linux system was installed from a distribution, you can
look for a package in you software package manager's format (e.g.
a rpm package for a RedHat system, should also work for newer
SuSE systems). This should provide the most convenient way to
upgrade flex.
You may also consider updating your system altogether, this will
require some effort, but it might spare you a lot of troubles with
newer software, on the other hand.
* If using a precompiled package is not an option for you, perhaps
trying some option for the ./configure script for flex might help.
What are the configuration options (try ``./configure --help'')?
* If all else fails, you should look at the lines listed in the
compiler's error messages, decide which type is "correct", and
patch the file accordingly.
