Esteemed database masters,

I am a dermatopathologist who has hacked together a simple database
system to run my dermatopathology laboratory. It is just some
perl scripts which interact with postgres via the DBI interface. I am
using postgresql v. 6.4.2 on a Linux system. The system has been in
place since February. Everything works splendidly, except that twice
since February the database has lost a series of pathology reports.
The first time about 20 reports were lost, and yesterday about 10. It
seems very unlikely that this is the result of a perl coding error, because
I can't identify any sections of my perl code that would make this
happen (there are no DELETE statements anywhere in the code, for
example) and because I would think that a coding error would have
caused the problem to occur more frequently. Thus, I am thinking that
there is something wrong with postgres, and that I may have to switch
to another database engine. I would of course prefer to avoid this,
and any suggestions that might enable me to do so would be much
appreciated.

Thanking you in advance,

Matthew Fleming
