Which the RedHat RPMS HAVE done.
Under RedHat any version (and 6.0):
su postgres
cd /var/lib/pgsql
initdb --pglib=/usr/lib/pgsql --pgdata=/var/lib/pgsql
su back to root and start postmaster.
RedHat placed it there for various reasons -- read my pages on this
subject on http://www.ramifordistat.net/postgres
