It's embarrassing to appear so dense, but it's still not working for me. I
understand that it's a matter of owership and modes for the directories.
Anyway, I've given up on the alternative location: I'll just build by
accounting software in /var/lib/pgsql.
Thanks much, Lamar. Tomorrow I'll grab the other packages (the locale-free
ones) and install them in lieu of what's there now. Then I'll let you know
how the regression tests come out.
