I should have read more messages in the archives.  Right after I sent my
message, I read that the following is typical:
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=16777216
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=100
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=51

postmaster now starts.  Thanks for your help.
One more thing - is there a password access facility for users in the
postgres system?
