[ADMIN] Vacuum Fails

Here's the error message:

pqReadData() -- backend closed the channel unexpectedly.
        This probably means the backend terminated abnormally
        before or while processing the request.
connection to server was lost
vacuumdb: vacuum failed

Does any one know what is causing this problem? What is the best
solution?
Version postgresql-7.0.3-8
