[ADMIN] Recovering from numbered directories

Has anyone done this? In a fatal crash where the backup only recovered 
the numbered directories (data dirs) of a PG installation (i.e. nothing 
above the numbered directories), is it possible to reinstall the exact 
same version of PG and recover the databases from just those numbered 
directories?
