I think the intended strategy is basically what you outlined above, with
inline responses interspersed with trimmed quotes.  I think we ended up
with bottom posting below gigantic quotes because of certain webmail
systems' idea (particularly Gmail) that "hiding" the quoted part within
a clickable ellipsis is a great invention.
