It works for me on a stock RHL 9 machine (or I think it's stock, anyway,
it's not my machine...).

$ rpm -qa | grep readline
readline-4.3-5
readline-devel-4.3-5
$
Maybe the presence of two different readline versions is confusing
matters on your machine?
