Laurenz suggestion looks good to me with some suggestions. I agree with Theodor's addition but I would use the same sentence from the source code that says 'subdirectory under the mount point'. I would also consider and/or modify pg_basebackup documentation that has a similar option. My suggestion is that waldir option in both tools has similar sentences.
