Yes, 8.3.3 binaries got installed in /usr/local/pgsql/bin and so the 7.3 version that I had previously didn't get overwritten. Binaries for 7.3 were in /usr/local/bin

Works now.

Could be a path problem. Try

Yeah ... the reference to libpq major version 4 suggests *very*
strongly that this copy of initdb is from PG version 8.0 or 8.1.
