Strange, your sample works as expected on my
PostgreSQL 8.4rc1 on i686-pc-linux-gnu, compiled by GCC gcc (GCC) 3.2.3 
20030502 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-59), 32-bit

What do you get for

select * from pg_tablespace;
