You probably have set standard_conforming_strings to 'on'.
In that case you should either use:
SELECT E'BERLETT\'S ROAD';
SELECT 'BERLETT''S ROAD';
Or set standard_conforming_strings TO 'off', in which case you'll just get a
warning.
