It's one of the standard error codes, see for example http://www.jbox.dk/sanos/source/include/errno.h.html Tom is right, it's not clear how this error can occur. Linux does it if you ask for O_DIRECT on a filesystem that doesn't support it, but it doesn't look like that's the problem here either.
