I reproduced this locally. Attached patch fixes this using the same approach (one that you suggested) as Heikki's nearby nbtree_half_dead_pages.sql fixup from commit 1c64d2fc. I'll push this just as soon as it passes CI. Thanks for the report! -- Peter Geoghegan
