AFAICS, the commits in the 8.3 history *after* that point are sane; at least there's one for each actual 8.3 commit in the CVS logs. Before that point, though, the history shown for 8.3 seems to include all HEAD commits as well. The merge commit is probably cleaning up those incorrectly included HEAD commits. I concur that we gotta abort the git conversion.
