I disagree- if we're being asked to log or to send output somewhere, we
should error out if we're unable to do so.  Consider doing that from the
shell:

sfrost@beorn:~$ psql > /bin/qq
bash: /bin/qq: Permission denied
sfrost@beorn:~$
