I was thinking C enums:

enum typtype_type {
        TYPTYPE_BASE = 'b',
        TYPTYPE_COMPOSITE = 'c',
        TYPTYPE_DOMAIN = 'd',
        TYPTYPE_ENUM = 'e',
        TYPTYPE_PSEUDO = 'p'

I'm not sure if this is better.
