We have recently successfully rolled-out a solution consisting of two PostgreSQL database backends replicated by Slony. The backends are accessed from a bunch of application servers (Apache) via pgpool. We have some shell scripts around it to handle monitoring, failover and switch-over. It is built on CentOS4 (ie. RedHat ES4).
