I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but in 7.1 you can do
something like:

    INSERT INTO bar(barpk,foopk) VALUES(barpkval,foopkval);
    GET DIAGNOSTICS rows = ROW_COUNT;
    -- do something based on rows --
