Gee, this sounds familiar. See the question ( http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-sql/2002-11/msg00191.php ) I posted of a similar nature a couple of days ago.
We decided to wait for 7.3/7.4 and in the mean time we're using CAST ( 'constant value' as numeric ).
