I'm really interested if someone can reproduce the problem on a slackware
box, as the error is quite mysterious to me...

You're right, I'll fix that. I'll also rename config.defaults to
profile.defaults, as all these config.* are a bit confusing I think. The
configure option will be changed accordingly. (this should be the last
interface change to the system, I hope)
