I ran a test to answer a question I though of during lunch, Does the same
auotmake and resulting configure script fail when I actually install SDL....
No, it does in fact work. if I install SDL it does work..
The error then lies in the sdl.m4 that Frederic sent me if I did not have
SDL installed.
It looks like the problem is there only for people who will not be using
SDL.
Hope this helps, and thanks Frederic for the help in tracking down this bug.

Subject: [Pgui-devel] Pgui Build problems Take II
I tried the same build process as before with the new automake system. It
fails on every linux box I can try it on, including a fresh redhat 6.2 box.
(I also tried the latest snapshot 20010516)
There is one thing that is the same for all of the boxes, I have to add the
SDL.m4 "fix" as I am not using sdl for the final product.
I am now wondering if the problem lies in the sdl configuration when there
is no sdl libraries installed.
I have tried this on RH6.2,7.0 Slackware 7.0 and 7.1
All produce the same error..
Syntax error in line 1828 on the configure file.
