You might want to try specifying a date spec for back when helio development 
was much more intense.  Since then most development has been for 4181 based 
machines (Agenda), and 4121 based machines (mostly by Hiroshi for NECs little 
guy, etc.).  There is also a new repository being setup that has merged most 
of linux-vrs' code, or that is in process.  They are bumping up to the most 
recent kernel versions, so you'll need gcc-2.95+, instead of the now ancient 
egcs line of compilers.  If you want info on that new repository you can look 
for posts in lkm, or you can email me privately and I'll dig it up.

You might also try contacting Jay Carlson, email is [EMAIL PROTECTED]  I don't 
even own a Helio, but Jay has been pretty active with userland stuff for both 
NEC-Vr processors and Toshibas as in the Helio, and he will have a 
functioning kernel for sure.
