Technically speaking you could use any LCD you wish.  If you were 
really adventurous with the soldering iron you could also run around 
the 4 other data lines for the LCD which are currently N/C'd.  (Think 
Sharp LM038QC1R01, this is the one I have a testing board for in my 
hands right now)  You might not need to do any solder work 
actually..., I think all 8 data pins might be coming through, (I'm 
too lazy to pickup a DVM right now), but you would have to get a 
little creative with a micro PCB to re-wire the way the VR4181 spec 
says.  (They have some retarded re-wiring logic for a 8 pin data 
setup for LCD)
