The two most common ones are:
mmddyy for the US (long form: October 21, 2001)
ddmmyy for the UK and others (long form: 21 October, 2001)
There's probably a way to get the proper format from an OS setting, but I'm
not familiar with that type of stuff. I think Windows has a system call
that'll give you dates, currency, and other numbers formatted based on
system wide locale settings, so I wouldn't be surprised if Linux has
something similar.
