Right. After Linux is booted you can just press the reset button, but after
putting the batteries in you have to go to the bootloader first. I'm not sure
why this is... You might want to ask on the vhl-tools mailing list, the
bootloader code came from them.

IIRC, it's 115200 bps, 8-N-1, no flow control
You might also try 9600 bps
