Well,  if  there is  a  way  for the  client  to  specify more  exotic
constraints,  maybe  regexps  are  overkill (for  instance  with  some
callback  mechanism).  But  I  fear  that  less  than  that  would  be
cumbersome: for instance, if you  want a field to enter an identifier,
you often have  a syntax where the first  character is more restricted
than what follows.
