But there is an API to put things in the panel bar, and I find
that very, really, totally cool and useful.
Perhaps you could go MacOSish and put those widgets on your
'thin rectangle', when the panel bar is gone? (And then the
'thin rectangle' would change when you change focus)
Still, I'm not sure I like this idea. I just abhor vi, because
'modes' are inherently hard to learn and one more thing to
remember when using.
