Just to update on my experience:
I edited autogen.sh to add a '--verbose' argument to the autoheader call.
Surprise, not only autoheader didn't go verbose (at last, not that I
noticed), but it worked and didn't complain.
Then an automake error was reported near the end, but I tried to ignore this
error and, second surprise, the compilation went fine and my resulting
pgserver is running.

It doesn't bother me that people say things like
"you'll never get anywhere with this attitude".
In a few decades, it will make a good paragraph
in my biography. You know, for a laugh.
