Hi folks

I've spent the last week working on ppp and have gotten some more info.
Someone on pdabuzz (who had done work with connecting via the cradle cable)
indicated that a null modem cable was unnecessary when connecting to a
laptop, so I stopped using one.

Next thing I did was verify that ppp was sending anything over the serial
line. I did this by starting pppd from a shell prompt in minicom. I was
hoping to see characters pop up on the screen indicating that something was
being transmitted. But there was nothing. I ran pppd with strace and it
said it was core dumping.

Thru trial and error, I got alot of errors, so it was a real trial ;-)
I found that if I ran pppd as follows

  pppd <local ip addr>:<remove ip addr> /dev/ttyS0 57600

it didn't core dump and characters did display on the minicom screen.

Unfortunately, when I put the new pppd command in inittab and tried
connecting to the laptop after a Helio reboot, no connection was made.

So, now I want to see if anything is being received on the laptop serial
port. I found statserial and am wondering if there are any other software
tools that will monitor the serial port. Someone at work suggested 'cat
/dev/ttyS0' which displayed nothing when pppd ran on the Helio.

Does anyone know any other ways to monitor data coming over the serial port?
Does anyone have any other ideas, suggestions as to what to do next?

Mark
