I brought up this issue some time ago, and IIRC Frederic said it would be
hard to support automake 1.5 in the build system.

There are tarballs, but they aren't what you're looking for probably... just
automatic snapshots from CVS without autogen.sh run. If this is an issue, I
could probably run the nighly tarball script on my server instead of
sourceforge, and have it run autogen.sh
