fbdev is a bit touchy, I could see how it could do that. Are you trying to
run it as root?
As for sdlfb, it is supposed to run under X.
Also: what is your application manager? Panel, rootless, null? I'm not sure
rootless works with anything else than Xlib video driver.
Don't you get any error message? Nothing at all on stdout? Perhaps you
should go back to menuconfig and activate some debugging output.
