Actually, the field widget is just a textbox with different theme defaults and
the multiline flag turned off. Since the field widget has a unique theme, it's
not deprecated, just much simpler and more flexible than it used to be :)

For controlling how things are inserted, try looking at PG_WP_INSERTMODE.
For example, you could set it to PG_INSERT_APPEND to do what you want.
