I just tried the gpm input driver along with the ncurses video driver using
the latest CVS (My nvidia card gets very cranky if I use the framebuffer)

It appeared to be working fine. Make sure you have permissions to /dev/gpmctl.
If you still have problems, use strace to find out what exactly is failing.
