Damien, You asked (some time ago) for examples, and I just enountered a concrete situation of auto-completion making it (AFAICT) impossible to edit text the way I wanted. Having downloaded a fresh developer image, I am trying to install the Pinesoft enhancements, and tried to comment out some progress blocks - autocompletion insisted on "completing" the quotes for me, and I finally gave up. In fairness, the fonts could be better, so I might be missing a visual clue. For me, I type fast enough that I basically want the machine to do what I ask, and not try to help. You asked :)
Please note that the answer to your question, "are the developer images useful?" appears to be yes.
